Lawyers Division Roadshow

The Ethnic Minority Lawyers Division (EMLD) was launched by the Law Society in 2011 with the aim of supporting black and Asian solicitors. The EMLD committee has a range of solicitor volunteers from across different legal areas of practise. The role of the committee is to help the Society to shape and deliver its race diversity strategy. As one of its aims, the EMLD committee is committed to raising its profile and increasing regional engagement. The EMLD national roadshow is a programme of visits to higher education institutions. The roadshow will comprise lawyer panel events and will give BAME students the opportunity to hear from lawyers who have similar backgrounds to themselves. In addition to sharing with the audience their journey into the law, the panel speakers will impart practical advice.

Umar Kankiya

Umar is a solicitor and head of mental health for Sternberg-Reed solicitors. He has represented people detained under the Mental Health Act since 2011 and has been a Law Society Mental Health Accredited Member and Qualified Solicitor since 2012. Umar is also a trustee for the charity Love Life Generation.

Ruihua Wang

In-house Legal Counsel - Trade Web, Ruihua is a dual-qualified lawyer with commercial experiences in both China and the UK. She trained and worked for six years at the leading international law firm Linklaters.

Maria Seale

Maria qualified as a chartered legal executive in 1997 and as a solicitor in 2001. She previously worked as senior solicitor to the Fitness to Practice team at the General Optical Council and has spent 21 years in private practice working for firms such as Lewis Silkin, Russell-Cooke and Veale Wasbrough Vizards.

Marcia Longdon

Marcia is a solicitor and partner at Kingsley Napley LLP. She is interested in immigration, nationality and European law. She has a collaborative approach with the Home Office and is often asked to participate in roundtable discussions on immigration policy. She provides technical and compliance training on corporate immigration for HR professionals in various industries.
