The intensity of the evening’s chill could not overcome the celebratory joy of students and staff aboard the Golden Jubilee boat for the 2018 Union Awards. As another successful year nearly comes to an end, the annual awards ceremony brought together the UEL community to celebrate the achievements and hard work of both students and staff over the academic year 2017-18.
With the Golden Jubilee effortlessly gliding along the Thames, the evening was met with our host and Welsh comedian, Dan Mitchell, as he kicked off the night with some light-hearted stand-up comedy. This was followed by the Students’ Union Sabbatical Officer giving a speech of thanks to all those who have supported them and the Union to achieve all that it has accomplished. Applauses, laughter, and tears of joy filled the room as the awards were handed out to those that have proven themselves worthy over the last year – programme reps, school reps, societies and their members, academic and non-academic staff and - of course - student staff members. Naturally, everyone is a winner, award or not. We all contribute towards the growth of UEL, as was acknowledged by Denis Shukur (CEO of the Students’ Union) in his closing remarks.
The night continued in the best possible way, with our resident DJ playing some of the best tunes across genres as guests marvelled at the sights along the Thames – hovering under Tower Bridge, reaching out to the London Eye, watching the busy lights of Canary Wharf, waving at passer-bys on Westminster bridge and many more than can be expressed in words.
Our destination at Canary Wharf pier, after an enjoyable and ‘once in a lifetime’ experience, was to pack up, end the ceremony and bid farewell to everyone on board the Golden Jubilee. It was definitely a night to remember and hopefully the Union Awards 2019 will be a bigger and better experience for everyone involved.
