Hackney Pirates pop-up at UEL

The pirates are coming
Education charity, The Hackney Pirates, is coming to UEL Stratford campus to run pop-up immersive writing sessions
with children aged 9-13 from local schools to help develop their literacy, confidence and perseverance. Join the adventure as a Crewmate!

When do they arrive?

The sessions will run twice a day from Mon 18th March - Fri 22nd March 2019.

Session times are 9am-12pm & 12pm-3pm.

What do pirates do?

The Hackney Pirates offers local schools engagement sessions (creative writing workshops). The pop-up pirates will use our proven engagement session, which works well with a class of children from Years 5 or 6. It also builds confidence in the creative writing process and knowledge of the ‘splurge & refine’ methodology.

During the session the group meets a captain, who tells a tale of adventure at sea and being ship wrecked on an island. The Captain takes them on an immersive pirate-themed journey. Supported by volunteers, children write an imaginative story in response.

Working through our Writing Islands of Ideas, Planning, Spurge, Refine method, each child will create a piece of creative writing by the end of the session.

In order to build upon their achievements and confidence in their writing skills the children’s writing professionally designed into a book and printed.

A celebration assembly will be written so that each school can present the children with a printed copy of their work and share the achievements of their Young Pirates with the wider school community.
