Things to do at the O2

I’m sure a lot of people have heard about the O2 Arena but how much do you really know about the entertainment venue? For those of you who are not familiar with the place I’m going to tell you all the reasons why you as a student need to make it your hotspot.

Although the O2 is not connected to UEL, it is the nearest arena to the docklands campus that hosts major events on a regular basis. So why don’t you take a break from studying and plan a visit to the venue at the end of your busy week?

The main entrance will give you the essence of Hollywood. The O2 attracts tourists from all over the world every night so you can be sure to expect to find a variety of multicultural diners and popular themed restaurants to suit every taste. The majority of the restaurants are a mix of American themed cuisines but you can also enjoy Italian and Oriental themed eateries. Two of my favourite places to eat are ‘Five Guys’ because the burgers will not disappoint, and ‘Jimmy’s International’ cuisine. What’s better than a buffet where you can eat spring rolls and Mexican burritos at the same time? The atmosphere is also very pleasant, despite it being very busy each night, and week day lunch time prices starts from as little as £9.99.

In the centre of the complex you will find a cinema at the top deck of the building, it's hard to miss because it's right in the middle where the restaurants are located.

One of the special features of the arena is an expedition called ‘Up At The O2’, where you can actually climb the O2 and see the beautiful skyline of Canary Wharf and the surrounding area of North Greenwich. It really does make for an incredible experience especially at night. If you’re a fan of heights then you might want to try this next time you visit.

Also, have you ever thought about working part time at the O2? The area offers many jobs to students like us. You could be part of the friendly team as a catering/hospitality assistant, a steward or part of the security team. What’s more fun than working night shifts where you can see your favourite celebrities walking around backstage and performing? You could be watching a sold out Beyoncé concert for free!

Head to the AEG Europe website for more details on how to apply for work.

And last but not the least, did you know that UEL have held graduation ceremonies at the Indigo for six years now? This is another good reason for you to check out the place where your graduation could be held in the future.

If you are a student living on campus at docklands you can make your way to the O2 by taking the DLR from Cyprus station, changing at Canning Town and then take the Jubilee line to North Greenwich where the arena is situated right behind the station (journey time approximately 20 minutes). If you are coming from Stratford campus you can simply take the same route on the Jubilee line from Stratford station.

There are many other exciting things to do at the O2 including nightly free events and exhibitions. So if you haven't been yet or just haven't been recently than this is one of the best places to make for a perfect night out for you and your friends where you can chill or celebrate in style.
