Retro review

This week we’re looking at fur. I can’t begin to explain how much I hate the use of fur. Unfortunately, fur is popular in fashion. Us first-year fashion students had a lecture about the use of fur in the fashion industry last term and, although it was interesting to hear the speaker’s points, the use of fur is just as widespread today as it was 40-odd years ago.

There was a phase where the use of fur was widely protested and cans of paint were thrown onto the coats of the people wearing them. The rise of animal activism had a massive impact and there was a period when fur was not as popular as it once was. But in the last (maybe) three years the use of fur has been steadily increasing, which means it’s making its way into our high street stores and not just designer garments.

Regardless of your opinion on the use of fur, you have to admit its sudden rise is rather strange. It started with the jackets with the fluffy hood that every girl and her dog had, and ended with ‘teddy bear’ coats which were just fluff. Why are we so obsessed with the use of fur, even fake fur, in our society? I will hold my hand up and say I did buy a fluffy coat – 100% polyester, might I add. Is it because we still connect fur with wealth?

Something you will be seeing in autumn/winter 2019/20 will be minimalist shift tops in relaxed fits. Shift tops are something that are a staple in many people’s wardrobes, especially my own. They are something you will be seeing a lot more of in the future so be prepared; they’ll come in more styles than what is already available but also be wearable and comfortable.

You will also find that a lot of fashion will also have the same relaxed fit as the shift tops, so keep that in mind if you are looking to create a collection for this season!

In Zoella’s latest Instagram post she is seen wearing black jean shorts and a crossover (Or tie up? To be honest, I’m not sure what to call Zoella’s top but it’s cute either way) oversized blouse with bell sleeves and what looks like a black bucket bag. I really love Zoella’s summery clothes. I think she always looks chic and fashionable; she never wears anything particularly dressy or very distracting to the eye – it’s always very elegant and stylish. This outfit is perfect for the warm weather we’ve been having recently and I’ll deffo have to go shopping to find something similar very soon!
